WHOIS is a protocol that makes it possible to view the info a given domain name has been registered with through a command line or by using special web-based lookup sites. This information includes the names, address and e-mail address of the owner, admin, technical and billing persons as well as the registrar organization the domain name has been obtained through, the creation and expiration dates. Except for a few country-code TLDs that have certain limitations, the WHOIS info of any domain address can be changed freely anytime, which is quite necessary considering that in line with the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details have to be current and valid always. Inability to comply with these policies could lead to losing the ownership of an Internet domain and in many cases a domain address could even be removed from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
